Grassroots Mentorship Program

Darts Alberta is proud to present the DA Member League Grassroots Program
The Objective of this program is to recognize grassroots competitors for their improvements through out the league season and to encourage league members to compete at a higher level of competition.

Darts Alberta launches a new DART shoot with $1,200 prize payout
A new Pro-Am style tournament has replaced the Grassroots Mentorship Initiative which had been in effect from 2004 to 2006.

All member leagues are eligible to nominate grassroots competitors to be eligible to have the opportunity to compete in the Developing Achievements of Rookie Talent (DART) shoot of the year and the number of nominations are based on the size of the member league:
Adult Member Leagues of 24 or less members – 1 grassroots award nominee.
Adult Member Leagues of 25 to 99 members – 3 grassroots award nominees.
Adult Member Leagues of 100 or more members – 5 grassroots award nominees.

As a Grassroots Award Recipient, you will receive:
An NDFC Membership Upgrade for the following dart season, paid by Darts Alberta.
Singles event entry into a Darts Alberta Ranked Tournament, paid by Darts Alberta.
Eligibility to register to compete in the next Pro-AM style DART shoot. Entry into the DART shoot will be by invitation only, limited to 32 participants (16 member league Grassroots nominees and 16 Elite adult / youth competitors) and will be on a first-come first-serve basis.

The list of eligible elite competitors has been expanded to include all those contained on the current Member League Championship’s Elite Competitors List as well as the Senior Male and Senior Female Champions and Runners-Up from the most recent Youth Provincial Championship.

2008 Pro-AM event scheduled for September 20th, 2008 in Calgary at the Penbrooke Community Center.

Congratulations to all, Winners and Participants, who attended the first annual DART Pro-AM style event last September 2007 in Red Deer.
1st Rikk Arnott & John Dechambre $600 ($300 each)
2nd Joe Anderson & Andy Baldi $300 ($150 each)
Joint 3rd Trevor Tierney & Ivy Wieshlow $150 ($ 75 each)
Joint 3rd Bill McDowall & Tena Pettie $150 ($ 75 each)

Historical Background
The Grassroots Mentorship Program was launched in February 2004 with anywhere from 1 to 3 Grassroots level members being selected from each league to participate in a mentorship partnership. The first partnerships began during the 2004-05 tournament season.

The greatest challenges were in securing Elite partners to participate at DA-Ranked Tournaments. Due to those challenges the program was restructured where 3 Grassroots nominees would each receive NDFC membership upgrades for the following season, but only one would be selected for the partnership program. This still presented challenges in getting nominees to commit to specific tournaments in sufficient time to organize elite partnerships and therefore, the program has been consistently under budget. This causes a challenge since the program is completely funding through our annual Grant and there is a need to ensure more Alberta Sport funds are spent on Grassroots initiatives.

The DA Programs Feedback survey shows that although a high percentage would likely participate in a future partnership, they are reluctant to give up their regular doubles partners in an open Ranked Tournament where top prize money is at stake. Other feedback suggests that partnering a Grassroots level player in an “open” tournament environment can place undue pressure on an individual with potentially little or no competitive experience.

When asked for ideas of new programs targeted at Grassroots level players, the majority of survey feedback suggested a stand-alone event and/or clinics to assist Grassroots level players to improve their skills. Other survey feedback included the need to increase awareness amongst the Member League members and guidance to Member League Executives regarding their selection process.
